LEE KUAN YEW (SG) Portrait from the Series "Find a Word for It" Collage

Each of my canvas requires 6 to 8 months to chase and collect the 100+ newspapers needed to build the background of my painting. Then a “mega Tetris” start: cutting 300+ titles, gluing them one after each other thoughtfully to respect the history, the chronology, adding some critics and personal view, making some titles talking to each other, revealing some parallels... None of the titles overlaps each other, imposing myself a high physical constraint to get the right title at the right size! This time consuming process allow me to get into the very deep of my work and apprehend each of these titles thoughtfully. 4 years ago, I started working on a series of portraits interrogating the construction of the iconography in politics. Immersing myself in a private photo collection dedicated to the history of photojournalism, surrounded by 400 vintage pictures, I carefully apprehended the birth and rise of political iconography toward the XXst century. Why a/some politicians become that Iconic? That "famous" as rock stars and Hollywood stars? What structure these legendary icons in our mind? This is how emerged the idea of this work named "FIND A WORD FOR IT". The goal is to understand the power of words in the genesis of contemporary icons. How harmless newspaper titles, randomly read start building this "pre conceived logos" in our mind. Like grin of sands, individually insignificant but able to build the biggest mountains when aggregated together.. These canvas allow you to see the portrait from far but with limited visibility on the titles, getting closer the image disappear to reveal all the titles...
