About The Artwork

____________ *Abstract Placing*: Painting with objects to create flow, order, and balance out of seeming chaos - provoking a deeper appreciation of the beauty and truth in the objects around us. ____________ LEAP FROG: One of my Abstract Placings that doesn't seem like it should work, but does, very well. Somehow the muted color of the tiny bottle in the upper right is undefinable, yet sets the tone for the whole thing - it mellows the yellow. Then the bright texture and pattern of the metal sharpens the shine. Picture this on your wall - it will say something different every day, and is sure to provoke conversation with others (and yourself). ____________ *How my Abstract Placings are made*: Out walking, I start with one thing I find on the ground that grabs my interest. Every thing that I pick up after is part of an unknown web linking each to the next - pattern, shape, texture - which I will discover when I fit them all together, on canvas. ____________ *CULTIVATED SERENDIPITY* I find objects; objects find me. I find pieces of stories: my story, your story - our story. Each object contains its own history, it's own spot in time. It wears this around its neck. This hidden history consists of layer upon layer of path and circumstance, built in like the rings of a tree. Moving histories, I create something new. One that fits the old bits in its mouth and chews slowly but surely. This new thing contains all that was, and some of what will be. It does not represent everything, but that very thing. ____________ SUBJECT MATTER: Not quite pink and not quite orange, Chinese, Shiny Gravel ____________ DETAILS FRAMED: No SIGNED: Yes, initials on front and full signature on back ________________________

ART, LIKE LIFE, HAPPENS BY ACCIDENT. A whiff of control; some semblance of steering. And belief of a firm grip. But we're grasping at the air beneath our feet. The truth is: we don't hold anything. It comes in bits and bobs, dashes and jots - brief glimpses, spaces, sliding out of sight. For truth, is to feel it slip away. And then to try to create it. - - - Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, & often both, my art reflects the intersection between logic and intuition, real and abstract, time and the timeless. - - - - - - - - - Steven Tannenbaum grew up in New Jersey, where he learned how to garden and defend himself. He now lives in Portland, Oregon, and his art is in public & private collections across the US, Israel, and England. You can find more of his work at: www.whatifind.com
