About The Artwork
I knew I wanted to make a piece to honour the polar bears when I heard a CBC/Radio-Canada interview with naturalist James Raffan about his book Ice Walker. In it, he tracks the lives of a fictional polar bear named Nanu and her two cubs as they navigate a melting Arctic landscape with its rising temperatures and vanishing sea ice. This was in many ways a painful piece to make. Each time I approached it I had to look into that mother's eyes and think about her martyrdom to human consumption and carelessness. This year has made it more apparent than ever how connected we all are when it comes to our health as a planet. In spite of these heavy thoughts, I made this piece quite light and open, reflecting my hope that we will make a better future for this little family and for all of us.
