Mimicry has allowed animals to adapt and blend in with their environment, increasing their chances of survival. As artists, we too have drawn inspiration from the world around us, often mimicking, incorporating styles and techniques of those who have gone before us. But in doing so, we inevitably inject our own perspective and lived experiences into our work. Through my project, I explore the balance between mimicry and originality, in the context of photography and collage, questioning what it means to be truly unique. These mediums enable the creation of works that challenge traditional notions of originality. Our tendency to take over our contemporaries’s mannerisms and styles to strengthen our connections can be both sustaining and stifling as we try to balance the desire for distinctiveness with the desire for belonging. By multiplying, layering, re-contextualising, and re-photographing found and old family photos, I seek to prompt viewers to question their own relationship with originality.

Agnes Eperjesy is a visual artist working in collage, mixed media and photography. She grew up in Gyor, Hungary where she studied fine art as well as economics before moving to UK, Scotland. She completed a photojournalism diploma followed by a masters degree in Organisation development based on Gestalt and complexity theories which informs and underpins most of her recent works. Her eclectic work experience ranges from exhibiting artist to senior corporate roles. The exposure to a wide variety of studies and professional practices is providing her with a fertile ground for conceptual art work. As an interdisciplinary artist she is using mediums that enable the subversion of imagery to shift meanings, create different narratives, new visual languages, new stories and to look at familiar scenes from new angles. Agnes is working with traditional and experimental processes. She tends to approach her work through a humanist lens often using a surrealistic style, analysing and documenting the human experience. She uses traditional photography to create liminal spaces between traditional and contemporary through the language of abstraction. Her experimental photography work is largely based on the study of phenomenology, the philosophy of experience. We experience our environment and others through the lens of our learned social norms, cultural background and upbringing. Her work explores the idea of what it may look like if we could strip ourselves from these preconceptions and look at our environment and ourselves more intuitively. Her collage art practice takes on social commentary, critiquing perceptions of ideal society and accepted individual behaviour, through layering and double meanings and symbols, while showing humour and irony. Her work has been exhibited at various galleries, art fairs and can be found in private collections.
