Drawing Conclusions, Photography and Drawing Composites on Paper. The street provides me with everything I need to create my drawings and paintings. Assorted images emerge and become a data log that is stored in my subconscious. I roam the cityscape picking up speed and energy from the crowds of people rushing around me. Visual stimulation is unique to every neighborhood, I use this to create variety in my work. With my camera and sketchbooks I turn my impassive surroundings into fluid abstractions. I have an intimate relationship with my environment. I see it, I touch it, and I use it. Building facades, discarded furniture, plastic containers evolve into a flowing arena of delicate pen lines and rich moving colors. These raw impressions, anonymous textures and organic shapes add lush tones, patterns and rhythms that resonate in the urban landscape. This process of reinventing and rediscovery is the core of my work. There is no truth, no order and no accountability, just my personal journey and a metronome that imposes its’ rhythm into my work. This force runs together, expanding and compressing like breathing in the moment.

Carol Caputo (°1949, New York, United States) is an visual artist who works in a variety of media. In a search for new methods to ‘read the city’, Caputo creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer round and round in circles. Her artworks establish a link between the landscape’s reality and that imagined by its conceiver. These works focus on concrete questions that determine our existence. By applying abstraction, she investigates the dynamics of landscape, including the manipulation of its effects and the limits of spectacle based on our assumptions of what landscape means to us. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of our imagination. Her works are often classified as part of the new romantic movement because of the desire for the local in the unfolding globalized world. However, this reference is not intentional, as this kind of art is part of the collective memory. By exploring the concept of landscape in a nostalgic way, she creates work through labour-intensive processes which can be seen explicitly as a personal exorcism ritual. They are inspired by a nineteenth-century tradition of works, in which an ideal of ‘Fulfilled Absence’ was seen as the pinnacle.
