I have collected 50s and 60s magazines for years and like the cheap reproduction black and white imagery. Mostly they were concerned with beauty and glamour, made by men for the male gaze, blondes, film stars, beefcake, sand getting kicked in 'wimps' eyes on the beach, it all seems so far away now, but maybe it isn't. Punk graphics concentrated on the irony of such sexism and brutal macho behaviour as did some Pop art, this is the arena in which I became political, the rise of feminism, gay rights, animal rights, we still seem to have to fight anew every day to maintain the right everyone has to be who they want to be, regardless of sexual orientation, bodily state, species or skin colour. Made with hand cut original paper newsprint, no photoshop or re photographing involved. I have mounted this collage on a black card mount and put it in a metal and glass frame, which can be propped on a shelf or sideboard, or hung on a wall. I will pack it carefully so the glass will be protected.
