Suppression Collage

This piece was made in response to the racial inequality that is so pervasive in our society. This piece shows the figures moving towards a central point. From the outside it appears that everyone has an equal footing but as you approach the center the lanes change shape and only the white figures are able reach the center. This is what I see as the problem with racism and racial injustice in this country. From the outside it would appear that all citizens are equal - but when you look at all of our institutions is is apparent that they are not. The scales are tipped and have been since the colonization of this land. From education, to banking, to policing, the courts, and access to clean air and water we are not equal.
