About The Artwork

This mixed media artwork is inspired by Medieval and Renaissance European Art. The society of that time laid great emphasis on religion and required religious images, and artists had to work within the structure of tradition. Another source of inspiration was the work of Marc Chagall, the merry uproar and roguish humor which characterize Chagall's sense of humanity. On the basis of these two opposing artistic approaches and methods, the work "The Three Marys" arose. Employing this unusual combination, moving from one artistic world to another, from one era to another I tried to use the opportunity to reinterpret the ideas of great old masters through an enhanced narrative. The idea was not to compare myself to such influential figures. Instead I set out to construct an artwork that serves as a channel for both personal and universal narratives as seen through the lens of feminine archetypes and symbols. The basis of the collage is a paper ephemera pasted on plexiglass, which is fixed on cardboard. Cuts of newspapers, magazines, advertising brochures are hand-painted with acrylic. The halos are covered with gold leaf.

Contemporary Austrian artist of Russian origin, Elena Vostryakova works with themes such as beauty, femininity, movement, the environment and the power of nature. She embodies her ideas through painting, collages of old painted paper and found objects, clay sculptures. As the daughter of an artist but self-taught, she seeks spontaneous, intuitive work, free from the intrusion of criticism and control. Her works are characterized by expressive lines and shapes, influenced by different cultures, and the combination of figurative and abstract elements. Elena always pays homage to her muse, Creative Wise Nature, by mixing shapes and materials and finding new uses for them. Her greatest achievements in art have come from a source of intuition and self-education, guided by inspirations from the natural world.
