ABOUT THE ARTWORK

“Calm” serves as a poignant visual narrative, portraying the serene resilience of a Black woman against the backdrop of today’s racial tension and the echoes of historical racism. The artwork, with its subtle yet powerful imagery, invites viewers to contemplate the strength and grace that persist within the Black community despite the challenges woven into our collective past and present. The piece delicately captures the essence of calmness—a resolute spirit that refuses to be broken. In the face of a world marred by racial strife and the weight of historical injustices, the woman depicted becomes a symbol of unwavering strength, navigating turbulent waters with grace and dignity. The use of visual elements in the artwork prompts you to reflect on the complexities of race, fostering a deeper understanding and empathy for the resilience required to maintain composure in the midst of adversity. Jeffrey A. Stapleton was born in 1960 in the central farmland of Tipton, Indiana, an area renowned for its loud shouting, expansive fields of corn and beans and rampant exaggeration about tractors. He went to art school, but didn’t really pay attention and then got a job with a Dayton, Ohio art studio where he was famed for scribbling silly characters, drawing without looking and such. Probably. A chance meeting with a new design firm saw him cast in the role that turned into a career and the rest is history. Except for jet packs, which are the future. More to come I'm sure.
