About The Artwork

(#108) “Graffiare Figures” Series This is a technique I call "Graffiare". Sgraffito and Sgraffiti come from the Italian word graffiare ("to scratch"), ultimately from the Greek (γραΦειν) (gráphein) "to write". I began using this technique in 2013. Instead of doing drawings in a sketchbook, although I still do that quite a bit, I thought it would be interesting to do them on a more permanent material. There are now 200 tiles in this series and still going. See more of them and my other work on my Instagram account @bernardrejr. How: The “graffiare” technique I used is to apply black majolica glaze in various viscosities to an already glazed and fired tile and then to scratch it away to create the “view”. The tile is then re-fired to fuse the over-glaze graffiare design to the existing tile surface. Note: Tiles can be displayed using a small easel or hung on wall.
