Using simple figures filled with elements from the natural world, this collection asks its viewers to look inward and question humanity’s perpetual struggle with expectation. What if we anticipated the opportunity to begin again – infinitely and without restriction – regardless of our surroundings and free from the judgment and social trappings of age or experience? What if we were as tender to ourselves as we are to a new leaf, gently unfurling and reaching towards the sun? Jessie’s drawings visualize the vast emotional life within each of us, conceptualizing inner narrative and personal growth. Using primarily colored pencils, cotton paper, and a warm color palette, she embellishes simple figurative outlines with dreamlike motifs from the natural world. These figures are at once unknowable and familiar, living in between memory, reality, and imagination. They act as an invitation to look beyond the appearance, environment, and circumstance of our everyday lives. Jessie is fascinated by the stories we tell to define ourselves – the beautiful and the terrible, the public and the private, the real and the imagined – and how those stories give shape and meaning to our lives. Her work encourages the viewer to engage with details of human complexity that everyday observation often fails to fully capture.
