About The Artwork

Part of an ongoing series, Man and Beast. This piece combines my love of the human face, texture, and design. I love playing with textures, and the pattern of her headdress, the texture of the sable antelope along with the darks and lights on her skin fascinated me. The dense black sets off the figures, and gives both depth and design as they break out of their assigned space. There is an elegant power at work here, both in her lovely profile and the dramatic sweep of the antelopes horns.

I've been a Creative Director in Boston, Miami, New York and Atlanta, dealing with accounts from Little Rock Arkansas to London. My love of design is only surpassed by my love of drawing. It is the basis for all art, whether it be design, painting or sculpture. You first need to sketch out your idea. For me, drawing has always been not only a joy, but also a need. I cannot stop. For years my notepads were lined with doodles, growing more and more sophisticated as time went on. Although I've also done oil painting, I have always been drawn back to the basics..black and white line. My aim now is to explore the depth, textures and impact that comes from rendering the human face and figure in the most basic of techniques. I use Japanese gel pens of different weights combined with large brushed in areas of India ink in multiple coats to give depth and richness to my work. Designer that I am, I try to design the space that my work inhabits, hence the large deep black areas the figures inhabit and burst out of. I draw almost constantly, in margins of notepads, in my moleskin notebooks and even on restaurant tablecloths...The infinite variety of human figures and faces gives me an inexhaustible subject matter to draw from.
