About The Artwork
Displayed on a horizontal surface, “Central Park” resembles an architectural prototype of a city, with crocheted greenery expanding across a woman’s postpartum body. This work speaks of the artist’s personal transformation after giving birth. The stretch marks crawling across the body is reminiscent of the indelible footprints we leave on our cities: the faster a city expands, the more numerous and longer lasting are the scars. This mixed-media work comments on the contrast and interdependence between the organic body and the built environment. The “Central Park” aims to sooth the inevitable trauma of procreation, whether it be on a personal or collective scale.

Sunny J is a Chinese visual artist living in Antwerp, Belgium. She received her degrees from the University of Rochester and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels-La Cambre. Obsessed with the Dissociative Identity Disorder, Sunny uses tempera painting, performance, textile, and installation to express her vision of time and space. She also pays special attention to the interchangeability of art and crafts, focusing on the educative and therapeutic functions of traditional crafts. She is the artist-in-residence in the Old School Residency program in Gorna Lipnitsa, Bulgaria (2015); Shangyuan Art Museum in Beijing, China (2016); AADK Residency in Blanca, Spain (2017); GLO’ART Residency in Lanaken, Belgium (2018), and Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai, China (2019). Her works are in multiple public and private collections in three continents.
