ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This little drawing is a seemingly playful image yet with all of my work it stems from my concern for animals and was inspired after seeing a lot of roadkill on a long drive out of Sydney that year. The deer, like the girl on a bike, are both in potential danger from automobiles on the road yet we often do not pay enough care to avoid hitting animals.

Claude Jones is a New Zealand-born artist, whose work explores the complex relationship between humans, animals, and the natural world. Jones’s sculptures are curious crossbreeds of animal, human and plant, evoking the fantasy realm of children’s books, but with a sombre twist. Her use of narrative, irony and symbolism, invites viewers to re-evaluate their relationship with nature, and in particular, with other animals. With an art career spanning over 15 years, Claude Jones has exhibited widely. She has been the recipient of several awards, grants and scholarships, including 10 international artist residencies. Jones’s artworks are represented in public and private collections around the world. Claude Jones is a plant-eating pacifist who passionately believes in the emancipation of all innocent beings. Her artwork reflects this philosophy.
