About The Artwork

This drawing is a quick dynamic sketch which was inspired by a beautiful sunrise scene in Muswell Hill, North London. I was interested in the tension between opposite directions here: dog pulling woman one way, road signs pointing the other. This is a drawing for lovers of the artistic process and materials. It was made with creamy oil pastels on cartridge paper primed with a ground of bright yellow acrylic paint, which you can clearly see in the background and gives the work its luminosity. You will also be able to spot some foundational grid lines that guided the composition. There is a white border (approx 4 mm) which can be displayed in full view or hidden under a mount when framing. This study later led to a larger painting of the same subject (which you can see on my website and will be exhibited later this year in London).

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

Karen’s work focuses primarily on capturing fleeting moments of beauty in everyday life, giving them permanence through the medium of paint: a landscape or building observed when no-one else is around, or the demeanour of a person absorbed in mundane activity. Process, colour and the quality of paint are her main drivers, and she has a fascination for the tension between darkness and light, flatness and texture, realism and abstraction. Starting from cropped images, oil pastel studies and abundant colour research, she favours acrylic paint, using a wide range of brush marks and textures. She occasionally incorporates other media such as collage or charcoal.
