About The Artwork

Sketch of the ruins of Dunure castle. A beautiful windy cold blue-sky December day on the west coast of Scotland. Hiding from the wind behind the ancient dovecot. I could actually hear the doves (likely pigeons) roosting through my right ear as I drew. Dunure castle has been in ruins for most of the last 300 years. It was originally constructed in the 13th century, but has been built on and further dissolved since then, so the best you can say is that most of what you can see is at least three centuries old. Its biggest claim to fame is that Mary Queen of Scots once spent three days here in August of 1563. Weirdly specific dating. Drawn live in prismacolor pencil across two pages of a moleskine sketch pad.
