This piece was inspired by the mythological occurrence of mushroom circles which different folklore traditions describe as "fairy rings". The most common version of that story, and the one I’m most familiar with from folk tales I heard as a child, tells the tale of fairies who dance around the fairy ring waiting for an unsuspecting passer-by to step inside the circle of mushrooms. Once the victim has been caught they get trapped inside the fae realm, lost to the mortal world forever. The character in my painting seems to have been trapped in one of these magical circles, while the true nature of his rest remains uncanny. Mushrooms symbolize decay, decomposition and the finalization of the circle of life. So this young man, oblivious to his own predicament much like the occult archetype of The Fool, lies happily on the meadow, letting his oblivion soothe him into the darkness which lies beyond.
