PAINTING SIZE: H 86 cm x W 65 cm x D 1.6 cm MATERIAL: Colour Pencil on Fine Art Paper. Framed with 1.6 cm wooden frame, matted. «Grandma»; created in 2017. One of the most lovable artworks “Grandma”; created in 2017. My lovable Grandma was the reason for creating this painting. She passed away 23 years ago. I captured this wonderful moment with my camera, while she was breaking almonds in her small home in the village, at Palaichori. A capture of an unforgettable precious moment of life, created by color pencil. With this art, I want to convey a sense of sweet nostalgia and help those viewing it to be reminded of their own happiness and how important and valuable are those special moments in our lives. I’m using color pencils because they allow precision, control of detail, and depth. I wanted to have control over my line weight and can be easily emphasized on details and shadows. Having control over the line weight is a great way to separate objects from one another and can help emphasize shadows. I’m transferring the simplicity and sensitivity of the moment by creating lighting and softness shadings in contrast to very dark and thicker lines, where I’m conveying the 3D form and focusing on the grandma figure. The grandmother's figure awakens these carefree and beautiful moments in the village and connects us to the past. Moments when my own and older generations lived and made our lives more beautiful and more special. Through this art, I convey these messages to the younger generations, thus keeping our roots alive. I want to inspire those who see my work to look more carefully and discover beauty in simple moments and the strength of emotions they obtain through this art. Through art we don’t just understand; we feel, we experience. Art moves us in ways that can bypass the walls we build to keep out the truth. ARTIST STATEMENT My art is a form of expression and an extension of my personality. I started dabbling in art from a very young age. I have always had a piece of paper and a pencil in my hand. My creative mind never stops; I’m continuously informed about the new trends in contemporary art and everything around me is an inspiration to my work. My artworks are inspired by my imagination and the passion I derive from even the smallest and insignificant things in life. I am an extremely visceral person and in many ways, I put myself wholeheartedly into each design. I never focus on specific art styles as I do not want to frame myself within a particular kind of technique and be more loyal to my own feelings. Different mediums always allow me to express different ideas. During the research, new areas of interest arise and lead to my next work. For the past 20 years, my work has almost always rooted in a personal mash-up of feelings and moments. Although there may not always be material similarities, they are linked by the richness of imagination and perfectionistic details. While I use a variety of materials and processes in each design my philosophy is consistent. Each work often consists of multiple sketches, in a range of different media and meanings and ‘Communication’ with my audience is mostly what I have in mind when I paint. I never have hidden messages and I love it when viewers express different emotional reactions and perceptions for each work. ARTIST BIO Xrista was born in 1974 in Nicosia, Cyprus.
