Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist and social activist. Born into slavery, Tubman escaped and subsequently made some 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 enslaved people, including family and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. I am inspired by the stories and struggles of these historical figures who fought hard to walk the path to liberty and freedom for themselves and their people. My hope is that my audience experiences a realistic portrait with its detailed textures while looking into the eyes of these prominent figures. I chose charcoal since it allows for textures, shades, and beautiful formation. I like the contrast of black and white with a vintage colorful background to show the timeless power, strength and inspiration these individuals hold in our world.
