About The Artwork

Chalk and pencil drawing on mounted paper. "This was the first portrait head study of the Scottish artist and playwright John 'Patrick' Byrne that I created. It was drawn directly from observation in Byrne's Edinburgh studio over the course of a two hour sitting. I had admired John's work as a student at art college and after a chance encounter we struck up a friendship. After a while I asked if I could paint his portrait. This was the first sketch, two other preparatory works; a pen drawing and an oil have subsequently sold. These were in preparation for a larger oil painting that was exhibited at the BP Portrait Award. 'John Byrne and his Guitars' has since sold and is featured in the National Portrait Gallery's published book '500 Portraits'." This is an important work in the sequence of works of the renowned Scottish artist, the culmination of which was a to achieve international acclaim for Mulholland.
