About The Artwork
Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American artist who became one of the most well-known representatives of the New York graffiti and street art scene in the 1980s. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1960 and died of a drug overdose on August 12, 1988, at the age of just 27. Basquiat's early career began on the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn, where he wrote graffiti under the pseudonym SAMO. In 1977 he co-founded the SAMO movement with Al Diaz and spray-painted the walls and buildings of cities with political and social messages. Basquiat later became a member of the graffiti group The Fabulous Five. Basquiat is also known for his powerful expressionist paintings that deal with political and social issues. He became one of the most famous artists of his time. Today, Basquiat is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
