ABOUT THE ARTWORK

SHIPPING AND RETURNS

An expressive, tonal drawing of my son when he was aged 2. The drawing conjures up the confusion of being small in a big and scary world. The charcoal has been further manipulated by the use of water spray to create a spatter effect.

Although I am primarily a painter, I also work in pencil and photography. Educated in schools in Malta, the UK and the USA, my broad interests are landscape and the human condition as I continue to push my own boundaries in the field of painting and my professional development. The paintings on this site are the culmination of ideas that I had about two interests of mine, namely the speed of the act of painting and the fusion of abstraction with representation. These paintings, at their best, and in different ways, consider this "hinge" and address the dynamics and conflict in the understanding of imitation and expression. In my current paintings, my aim is to build on this working process, using this spontaneity and the ‘act’ of painting as the basis for further exploration. I am interested in an economy and immediacy in the brushstrokes that forces the eye to make it what it is. I like the possibilities that are created by my personal response to something causing the viewer to have their own very personal response. I am aiming to infuse the work with movement and a sense of place. Using, although not exclusively, landscape as a starting point will allow me to experiment with this synthesis of observation and the act of painting.
