About The Artwork

This is one of a series of male nudes draw in the studio. The figure is depicted from a low angled view giving it a dramatic aspect, the white highlights on the chest and stomach accentuate the form of the figure and the ruddy compexion of the face contrasts with the lighter ochre yellow tones of the body. The figure looks away from the viewer in a defiant sort of pose. The drawing uses bold marks, I used watersolube oil pastels and washed over it to give the drawing a watercolour feel. I wanted to give this drawing a sense of drama and it is one of the most powerful figure drawings I have done.

I have worked as an artist and illustrator for over 30 years but for a considerable amount of that time I freelanced mainly as a cartoonist, producing 'gag' cartoons for the likes of Punch, Reader's Digest, Private Eye among many other titles including working for over 17 years as the weekly cartoonist for the trade magazine to the UK's bus and coach operators' market, 'RouteOne'. I always maintained an interest in painting and drawing during those years and since the cartooning aspect of my career has waned in recent times, I have been trying to promote myself as an artist and have painted and drawn buildings, life drawings, landscapes, still lifes as well as paintings with a humorous twist. I like to work in a variety of mediums, acrylics, alkyds, oils, watercolurs, pastels and pencil but I am particularly drawn to pen and ink, I think a background in illustration and cartooning largely accounts for that. I work in a variety of styles and to date have never settled on just one style which can be perplexing to some people (it perplexes me at times!), I am always striving to develop myself as an artist and every piece of work I see as a challenge, to me there is no other way!
