About The Artwork

A giant black alligator dominates this picture, its jaws open to the sky and its back feet planted firmly in a rocky desert setting. A group of workmen, dwarfed by this massive creature, appear to be busy collecting large brown ovoid objects which may be the eggs of this giant reptile (a shallow crater - a nest? - lies beneath its feet), and are loading them onto the back of a red pickup truck. The men seem to be oblivious to the giant creature above them, to the point where we begin to wonder if the alligator is a monumental sculpture. In the desert behind, we can see the bloodied back of Christ, who carries a cross, possibly on the way to Golgotha. This drawing came from my experience of depression, in which the giant black jaws of some internal monster reptile consume everything there is, including light and hope. Christ's suffering echoes this pain. The everyday life of the workmen, however, continues unaffected by this suffering - life always moves on.... Meanwhile a couple of angels dangle from ropes that are hanging from the sun - are they climbing up, or climbing down? I like to think it is the latter - tired of their ethereal life, they escape heaven and eternal life to join the earthy reality of human life. My influences in this drawing are Brueghel and Bosch, where Earth, Heaven and Hell collide.

"Although I state that much of my work stems from the imagery thrown up by depression, I would say that it is also the imagery of unconscious connection.Indeed the two are irrevocably entwined. It is no accident that the appearance of animal symbols and the use of bodily products such as hair, urine and blood is also influenced by my former work as a veterinary surgeon. Some time spent in psychoanalysis has helped me to illuminate these connections to find a personal mythology, which I believe connects to a universal meaning of what it is to be human. The `otherness` of animals, their power, vulnerability, unselfconsciousness and instinctual drives, and their relationship with us, are potent symbols of qualities we also have - qualities which we struggle with in our attempts to remain in control of ourselves and our society. It is where these tensions meet that my work is situated." Studio: Sculpture Shed, Spike Island, 133, Cumberland Road, Bristol, BS1 6UX. Tel: (0117) 929 2266; Email: michael.hayter@blueyonder.co.uk
