About The Artwork

Drawing: pen on Cardboard. Part of a series of drawings inspired by the sculptures of French artist Alain Lambert. I was really drawn to these huge solid heads that seemed to hold the whole of history. They seemed a place where you could put human love without having to love a human. There's something about their decapitated state that highlights how as humans we've become involved in their destruction, so there's a huge sadness about them too. When I look at them they seem indistinguishable, sometimes animal, sometimes human so that their destruction illustrates how we're destroying ourselves too. I think my drawings became a kind of mothering response to this, trying to seal this separation between man and beast, with the lines of the body becoming connectors to the heads.

Eleanor Adair is a Scottish figurative artist who was born and grew up in Glasgow. Her work is concerned with self-consciousness and identity and tries to capture the constant shifts between the physical and emotional expressions of human form. "I'm heavily drawn towards figurative art and find the human form the best place to explore those extremities that make the body talk. The bodies that materialise in my own art become an alternative account of the routine human form, bodies for eyes that like to wander. Recently I've concentrated on portraiture and drawn on neolithic and paleolithic archaeology for inspiration. I hope these observations offer vision into much of my portraiture, so that each face crosses boundaries of time and culture and brings something of our cultural past to the foreground".
