About The Artwork

For me, this was THE iconic yacht of our era. It was the yacht race that changed the course of history. I remember staying up to watch the highlights as an excited 14 year old. Essentially this event changed the course of my life and has led to some amazing experiences, challenges and adventures. Fast forward to 2001 and I was fortunate enough to be asked to sail in the Modern Class at the 12-Metre World Championships that took place in The Solent as part of the America's Cup Jubilee Regatta, a celebration of 150 years since the event began. I raced on the last British 12-Metre to challenge for the America's Cup, 'Crusader', as bowman. It was a late invite as the regular bowman, who was and remains a great friend, had injured himself and was recovering from a broken arm. We raced closely against 'Australia II' and we spent time with the original crew after racing. I still have a 'Boxing Kangaroo' lapel badge that John Bertrand, KA-6's skipper gave to me at a cocktail party during that amazing week. Overall, 'Australia II' beat us by one place finishing 3rd overall. Memories to last a lifetime. However, the series she became most famous for and the one that changed the course of the history of the up until then little known (in broader circles) America's Cup was held in the September of 1983 in Newport, RI. It was to be a best of seven race series and 'Australia II's comeback meant that it came down to this final race. In fact, with three lead changes throughout the race it had been nip and tuck all the way around the course. The final beat saw a tacking duel in which 'Liberty' tried in vain to get clear of the challenger's grip. After 47 tacks on the final beat, 'Australia II' crossed the finish line to win the America's Cup and be the first challenging yacht to beat the defender in 132 years.

Born London in 1969, I grew up being encouraged to draw and my school studies ended up concentrating on art related subjects.I moved to the south coast of England in 1992 which enabled me to develop my experience in sailing and other outdoor sports.Having always created work in either pencil or pastel, in 2002 I decided to teach myself to paint; initially in watercolour and soon received a number of commissions. A year or so later I took the opportunity to paint full time. I now work predominantly in oil with some drawings and intricate sketches in pencil. I also indulge in a little photography, too. My inspirations may not always be reflected in my work but I list J Steven Dews, Shane Couch, Jamie Medlin, David Curtis, Montague Dawson, Steven Dews, Derek Gardner, Ian Houston, Robert King, David Sawyer, Peter Smith, Richard Thorn, JMW Turner, Vettriano and John Webster as some of the painters whose work I observe closely.
