About The Artwork

The Ruddy Turnstone is one of my favorite shorebirds. Not only are they beautiful birds to look at (especially in their breeding plumage), they are quite entertaining to observe, as well. Turnstones' bodies are generally quite stocky for a shorebird, and their beaks fairly short. This build allows them to pick through beach debris with ease, flipping over shells and small stones to find the tasty little organisms underneath. Ruddy Turnstones are still common birds, but shorebirds as a whole have faced serious declines over the years. The development of coastlines, rising sea levels, and depletion of critical food sources have all had an impact on shorebird populations. This drawing is part of my Wildlife Conservation Series. This means that 40% of profits from this artwork will be donated to help support wildlife conservation efforts.

Ever since I was a little girl, I have been drawing animals. In fact, I can't even remember a time when I wasn't into art. In school, much to my teachers' disapproval, I covered my notes and homework papers with small drawings of cats, horses, and a variety of imaginary creatures. In college, I studied biology, and I am currently working seasonal jobs as a field biologist. I love working outdoors, with as much interaction with wildlife as possible. I have always loved animals, and I think it's no surprise that my artwork focuses on the same subjects. I currently work primarily in soft pastels and graphite. As an avid birder and biologist, I am constantly and painfully aware of the many, many threats that so many species and their habitats have to face. From climate change, habitat destruction, and pollution to invasive species, poaching, and wildlife harassment, humans have had tremendous negative effects on the natural world. Through my art, my goal is to share with you the beauty and incredible diversity of our planet, and all the wonderful things that could some day be lost. Treasure the earth and all its inhabitants, for we depend on them far more than most of us realize!
