About The Artwork

Nguni Cattle, Lidgetton, KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. This piece is dedicated to the memory of Johnny Clegg (South African musician of Juluka and Savuka fame), who passed away on the 16th July 2019. He and Juluka played a poignant role in my youth since their first album, "Universal Men," in 1979. The album "Scatterlings" was released in 1982, when I was a skinny teen of fifteen with a love for all things African – and "Scatterlings of Africa" was a track from that album. Thirty-seven years later, this love has not diminished, and as I had recently begun a series of artworks featuring Nguni cattle, I felt that this piece would make a fitting tribute to this legend of our time. Indeed, Johnny (the "White Zulu") often referred to the fact that these beautiful cattle are culturally and economically central to our country's black tribes. Thank you for the journey, Johnny Clegg – you remain the greatest scatterling of us all! The beloved Nguni breed of cattle are endemic to South Africa — a highly-prized hybrid of different Indian and later European cattle breeds, they were introduced by Bantu-speaking tribes to southern Africa during their migration from the north of the continent. I always work from my own reference imagery (except where commissioned otherwise), and from a shoot of perhaps 100 images, I may choose five to render in charcoal, conté and chalk pastel. Currently, I am busy with a series of Nguni Cattle artworks.
