Drawing: Charcoal on Paper.
This is a self-portrait done in charcoal on watercolor cold pressed 140 pound paper. I did a series of self-portraits in charcoal and in oil from life in my shared studio in Wong Chuk Hang in Hong Kong. I enjoy using charcoal for it is a soft and tender medium which can be smudged easily.
During this time, I believe I was looking closely at the evocative self-portraits of Kathe Kollwitz (1867-1945) and the tender works of Edwin Dickinson (1891-1978).
