About The Artwork

When the pandemic started in 2019, I felt that we needed a little more protection, so I started a series of works of abstracted figures to stand guard over us. They all stand on the same ground holding large spears/pikes. This put them all in the same imagined space but then each one was made different by using experimentations in line, form and color and built using automatic drawing methods similar to the early abstract expressionists. I call them Sentinels as it portrays them as figures that were always on guard, always shifting, forever morphing and keeping the viewer aware of their presence. This name also refers to the Sentinelese – a uncontacted tribe who inhabit North Sentinel Island in the Bay of Bengal who are known to repel or kill all outsiders. With one being a soldier and several becoming an army, I consider these Sentinels to be both guardians of modern art and good luck charms for those who own them. Warriors who defend the principals of the hand made image and charge the space they are in with saturated color and vibrant forms.

I've always had a love affair with making the hand made image. Exploring my imagination and setting up challenges through thematic works has allowed me to tap into an eternal wellspring of ideas. After my early training, I began creating series of works that allowed me to invent within a defined framework. Sometimes, these series would last years before I felt that I had exhausted them. The themes are often autobiographical and sometimes reference real-world events but the commonality is always a love affair with the basics of art: line, shape and color.
