This work is part of an early series of studies of bodies at rest and in motion, which led to my later interest in dance. These works explore ways that bodies occupy architectural space. In this particular work the man is sitting on the floor. The floor, which is shiny occupies a very large portion of the foreground. Hopefully you feel the man's concentration, completely removed from the world where other people move around him. Hopefully you feel time. As a study of bodies in motion, this man is moving, while being still.

I am a practicing architect, and now looking back at some of the earlier studies that shaped my understanding of space, the movement of bodies in space, and my later interest in contemporary dance. I was born in Moscow and came to Canada when I was ten. I think I saw the world from a different side which made me more attentive to it. I enjoyed drawing and working as a theatre make-up artist - drawing directly on the body and transforming it. Twenty years later, I moved again, this time to London, England. I continued working in architecture and in parallel discovered the beauty of dance as a medium of composing form and capturing the fragility of the body. Another ten years later I moved again to Canada. I have always felt that time moves along an expanding spiral.
