About The Artwork

Study for the Virtue Series 1 is the first drawing of a project that seeks to achieve several goals. The first goal is to draw the human figure following inspiration from the Baroque period, where the human body expresses a physical, emotional, and sometimes spiritual intensity within snapshots of dramatic, violent or ecstatic events. The body therefore offers the viewer an instant way to relate to the event through strong emotions such as empathy, fear, horror, disgust, tenderness, awe. The use of bright colour and added depiction of textiles also contribute to the dynamism of the period, however, this project vision calls for finding a contemporary way to present the elements. A second goal is to follow inspiration from anatomical drawings from the Renaissance masters which I admire for being extraordinary sources for understanding the interaction of muscles in the presentation of a whole body expression. Finally, through the models described above, I am attempting to focus that physical tension as an expression of strength and virtue in a way that can become aspirational. The Virtue Series is then an attempt to find physical expressions that denote, kindness, charity, loyalty, perseverance, courage, trustworthiness, etc. The series was originally conceived as drawings of pairs of people engaged in moments that capture the exercise or pursuit of virtue. The studies are preparations for the series. The drawing is on a firm, white, Canson paper for watercolour with a slight texture, chosen because of the use of gouache as the means for applying colour in this particular study.

I'm completely captivated by free drawing as the mediation of the magic that transforms three dimensions into two, yet allowing shapes, relations and proportions to emerge on paper, generating something that embodies much more than the bi-dimensional representation of a subject. I favour charcoal because it offers a powdery, dusty substance that leaves traces on paper in a direct, primal way, and gouache because it brings the charcoal structure to life, vibrating with an earthy, almost sculptural feel at the same time that it offers a surprising effect as if drawn on fresh plaster for a fresco. I seek the intensity of life, the expression of the animating force with its thrust toward growth, freedom and its intention to flourish.
