About The Artwork

During quarantine 2020, Malu inspired herself in the features of her room at a guesthouse where she lived during her stay in Porto, Portugal. Malu captures the light and warmth entering the room, and impregnates the space with textures, colors, atmosphere ... We're transported to another era, and yet, only her contemporary sensitivity and experiences, her search using elements of distortion and cubism with a current color palette could make it possible ...

Malu Ribeiro is a Brazilian born US-Swiss citizen who has lived in 8 different countries, including a more than 30 year residence in the US. She began formal art training attending assiduously the atelier of the Argentinian surrealist painter/printmaker A. Castro Couso, during her high school years in Vigo, Galicia. During those 4 years, she participated in group exhibitions with his atelier beginning her 2nd year of attendance at 17 years of age. After moving to the US, she pursued a BFA in Theater at URI. Years later, after living in Paris, she returned and completed an MFA in Print-making at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn (USA). She also became state certified Visual Arts & Theater teacher, and taught in pre-college and college as well. Malu has received honors and awards in juried competitions, including participation at the Pratt Fine Arts Symposium organised by sculptor Prof. Jillian Jagger, and guest speaker Laura Hopman (then, curator of the Depart. of Drawing & Paper Arts at MOMA). She received Honorable Mention at the New York/New England Talent competition organised by University of Massachusetts. She also received a Merit Award at the International Juried Show, Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, by art historian and critic, Donald Kuspit. In 2015, she began an MA in History of Art & Criticism at SBU. She has exhibited internationally in several solo and group exhibits; her work is in private collections in NY and MD (US), also in Italy, UK, and Portugal among others. She recently exhibited at, Art Fair Carnavalesque Van der PLAS Gallery, in Manhattan, NY. She lives in Brooklyn, NY, but splits her year in European cities.
