"Topping & Company Booksellers in Bath II" is an oil pastel on paper inspired by a photograph I took during my trip to Bath, few years ago. Bath's been on our to do list for a long time and we finally made it there, on one of our last trips before leaving London and moving back to Italy. So you could appreciate how dear to me is this artwork. that holiday in Bath was amazing, the town is so elegant and beautiful, there is so much history all around you and just strolling by is a pleasure. As I love books I remember going inside this lovely bookstore, one evening, and couldn't help taking pictures. Books are just magical devices. they are beautiful objects but they are much more than just their physical presence. At the same time I cannot deny that I find them stunning to look at, and that if I do not like a book's cover, I will conceal it under some brown paper, so to not let it spoil my enjoying of its content! Painting this artwork's been so much fun as it gave me the chance to focus on the interiors, the colors and shapes of the books, some titles as well. While making this artwork I found out that today is UK National Bookshop day, what a nice coincidence! Sennelier oil pastels are my favourite medium at the moment and using them to paint and draw is just amazing for me, every time I am working on a new piece of art I feel like I am traveling in time, back to the place and the moment when I first saw the scene, and it's like living it again. I hope this artwork will transport you to a nice, cozy bookshop, enjoying the wonderful smell of books. This artwork is made with Sennelier oil pastels, a great brand with a rich history: these pastels were in fact invented for Pablo Picasso, and although he is not among my favourite artists, it is nice to think about walking in the steps of such famous artists, when using them. I like to think as my art more related to artists such as Andy Warhol for the use of colour and focus on everyday life objects, and Edward Hopper, for the way I look at people in an urban context. This, like all the artworks from this series, has been treated with two to three layers of fixing spray; nonetheless I advise to promptly frame it with a glass too, to protect it from the dust. The artwork will be shipped rolled in a tube, I recommend to take it as soon as possible to a framer, to professionally flatten it back and to provide a frame with a glass, as the oil pastel needs to be protected from the dust.
