About The Artwork

"A Drop of Water Echoes" delves into the realms of time, place, and impermanence. Meticulously curated materials sourced exclusively from Los Angeles between 2013 and 2021 form the very heart of this creation, encapsulating the essence of the city itself. The quest for a distinctive black material spanned an arduous four-year journey. The artwork beckons viewers to contemplate these often overlooked materials, deserving of attention due to their profound connection to the passage of time. The creative process treads the delicate balance between swiftness and precision, honoring the fragile and ephemeral nature of the materials. The presence of concrete not only serves as an architectural foundation for the painting but also pays homage to the material's use in construction and reconstruction. It stands as a poignant counterpoint to the fragility of the materials harvested from the city's walls. Manifesting as portals, drawing inspiration from diverse sources, the artwork embodies multifaceted meanings that transcend it's enigmatic exterior. The portal form metamorphose the picture plane through which viewers project their own ideas and aspirations. The artwork's narrative navigates between progress and regression, mirroring the undulating currents of dreams, metamorphoses, and self-reflection. The portal emerges as a rift in the social contract woven by the dream, symbolizing the fragility of its promises. "A Drop of Water Echoes" encapsulates the quintessential Californian dream, born during the gold rush era and molded by Hollywood's ascent. This dream finds echoes in the contemporary realms of reality TV and social media, reflecting the timeless quest for instant gratification. "A Drop of Water Echoes" serves as a meditation on the interwoven concepts of the California dream and introspection. It offers commentary on the city's yearnings, trials, and timeless pursuit of success within an ever-evolving landscape

Cody Bayne is an Artist based in Los Angeles. He has exhibited his work extensively across the United States, Canada, and Europe, and is known for his interdisciplinary approach to art-making. His practice encompasses painting, mixed media, sculpture, and new media, all of which he uses to explore themes of time, impermanence, identity, and place. Bayne's work is characterized by a personal visual language that creates intellectual and emotional connections with the viewer. He often uses materials sourced from various cities around the world to create a visual vernacular that is both familiar and foreign. His work is influenced by 20th-century art movements such as Nouveau Réalisme and Art Informel, and he has coined the terms Neo-Urban Expressionism and Urban Informalism as quantifiers for his physical practice. Bayne's artistic process involves "harvesting" information from the environment of the city and reassembling materials into compositions that reflect his interest in the beauty of flaws and the discarded. He balances formulaic parameters with action-oriented processes, and allows immediacy and accidental interventions to play a strong role in the making of his work. His artist hand is discernible in all his work, serving as a symbol of both humanity and the distressed conditions and environments that inspire him. Though Bayne does not intentionally approach his work through a filter of social commentary, he is keenly aware that the poetry of the metropolis leads to this conversation. His work is contemporary and academic, addressing impermanence, coded vernaculars, identity, and place. Through his art, Bayne strives to create a visual dialogue that transposes from walls, streets, and a personal language, and fosters a connection between contemporary art and cultural intersectionality.
