"All About The Benjamins" represents to me the blending of today's society and the combination of wealth, finance, luxury, fashion and the corruption of old technologies. It was created on a custom wood panel with ink, oil, digital transfer, gold leaf, enamel and gloss resin. There are themes in this series of artworks that speak to wealth and corruption and aestheticizing these themes: rampant materialism contrasted with historic events, conflicts between control and unpredictability, disassembling and re-appropriating the systems that surround us, technological chaos versus human balance — or vice versa. This repurposing and deliberate corruption of materials through pixel-glitch painting and historic events speaks directly to our collective loss. And just as this visual corruption speaks to our society's loss, incorporating luxury brand logos represents our very personal effort to represent ourselves as perfect in an imperfect world. I chose this medium and the subject matter as a way to express what I see as a world coming apart, obsessed by power, corruption, luxury, wealth and technology.

As a contemporary artist Taylor Smith explores social awareness through abstraction and figuration with elements of science, traditional still life and portraiture. Smith uses a wide variety of materials and mediums including reclaimed silkscreen frames, discarded analog technology, luxury brands and commercial packaging. She also incorporates mathematics, organic chemistry, mechanics and photography into her work. Frequently working with 8mm film and other analog film mediums, Smith blends the practice of filmmaking and painting. Her recent work explores the relationship between pop culture, luxury brands, political upheaval and crisis to create an unexpected and transformative experience.
