About The Artwork

How to evoke a memory? We can all be taken back in time by many stimuli - a smell, a sound and by reminders of unrelated events. Evocation I uses old newspapers I had stored from July 2003. The news stories aid the recollection of more personal events against the backdrop of world happenings. This piece uses vintage newspaper cut into strips and woven by hand into a warp comprising linen, cotton, silk and synthetic yarns. As the newspaper strips were woven on the loom, I caught snippets of the news articles of the time, but was also taken on a journey through that year from an individual point of view. The text and images become jumbled in the woven structure, just as memories become distorted and intangible, slipping from one’s grasp, the details being lost. The construction of the weave pattern, which uses hanging threads to partially obscure the text, draws the viewer in to observe the details and gives tantalising glimpses of words and pictures, which themselves recombine to form a randomised graphical design. I work primarily in weave, using the loom as a tool to blend materials into a visual abstract woven image. I see weaving as a metaphor for memory, and the impermanence of textiles reflecting the fleeting nature of memories.

Veronica is a textile artist specialising in weave. With a passion for reusing and recycling waste and a perceptive sense of colour and textural combination, Veronica uses materials such as newspaper, vintage maps and cassette tape to create wall-hangings and panels. These make tactile and beguiling, quietly powerful additions to any interior. With materiality as a starting point, Veronica gives value and meaning to the apparently worthless and waste materials. Depth and character are created in the weave using structural effects and floating threads. Reacting to the material and its provenance, Veronica exposes its essence through the subtle combination of texture, colour and pattern. "Weaving is a metaphor. Textiles are a metaphor. Their impermanence reflects the transient nature of remembered events, experiences and emotions."
