My art is about the strength of nature and architecture working together, when these two worlds find an equilibrium. Reaching this point is our ultimate challenge, and this is where there’s a fascinating story to see. Drawing on observation, memory and imagination, I compose images of buildings and landscapes that are recognizable, but something is often off – prompting you to reconsider the relationship. The mixed media technique involves maps relevant to the scene, adding a sense of place and reality. I aim to capture how we may feel connected to a place, not in a nostalgic way necessarily, but how we as human beings are connected (or not) to our environment and the rest of the world. What is the impact of our choices? Where do we experience beauty? How do our needs interact with nature’s needs? In my series of the past years I repurpose old maps, add paint, and cut them up to build architectural compositions. The effect is an intriguing image both close-up and at a distance. The works look like paintings, but are built with pieces of paper, and are varnished to protect the colours. I also work on commission, incorporating your personal maps and/or depicting architecture that is special to you.
