ABOUT THE ARTWORK

“I hope you feel better soon” - I’ve been saying that quite a bit lately. So much so that it feels like words from a tattered page in a book, the story long forgotten. What do you say when someone is struggling and you are a helpless witness to it? Hope is the only thing we can offer when the outcome remains unknown. This series of works explores the notion of hope vs. outcome. I use construction paper in my work when I want a piece of the artwork to change over time. I have noticed that dark colored construction paper will get lighter with time, and white construction paper will get darker. This occurs when the work is exposed to sunlight and is the intended effect. In this series of works, between the pieces of construction paper, I have colored in the negative space with soft pastels. This medium will not fade with time. So what does the construction paper represent? Does the struggle fade with time? Or is the struggle the pastel color and do our spirits fade with time? Only hope can shift that narrative.
