artist statement by Michael Weingart
Inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement of the 20th century and the representation of a distorted reality away from screens and pixels, the idea of analog filters was born.
The intention is that the handcrafted creation of art should once again come to the fore and move away from the idea of a generated reality.
The rapid change of modern times due to cross-border and cross-cultural achievements of the digital world presents society with new dangers and challenges.
The advancing innovation usually emerges faster than the regulatory instruments and confronts the individual with the obligation to deal with it thoughtfully.
How are we supposed to be able to distinguish generated reality from reality at all?
The interplay of the optical effect with the element of light, as a generic term for the seen, creates a distortion of the real image behind the filter.
They allow reality to liquefy or morph remote parts of the space into another place. The filters thus create the perfect illusion of a distorted reality and symbolize life with modern media.
The viewer becomes an important element of this interplay.
They are invited on a journey of discovery of the distorted reality and are encouraged to question what they see by changing their point of view and direction.
This can be seen as a metaphor for analyzing images and news in modern media.
The presentation of this theme in an artistic way is intended to initiate a dialog about the perception of reality and the discourse on a modern concept of the term.
Each of these filters is unique and is created according to new patterns of thermoplastic transformation of the materials acrylic glass or PET. Additional aids such as patterns or regular representations behind them can be used to demonstrate the distortion effect.
