The spaces of Virginia trees over the Kuwait sunrise are the green countermeasure to the dryness and heat of the city and contrast the damaged environment of Kuwait with the green beauty of healthy forests. In the two years we lived in Kuwait, during pandemic lockdown, the green trees were always on my mind.

Kate Brogdon is an artist of many media, born in Vienna, Austria, working in Virginia. She grew up across the United States, mainly in Idaho. She moved multiple times worldwide, completed her bachelor degree at the University of Virginia and a variety of work experiences, most notably 25 years as an active duty Marine, drawing images and ideas from every stop. Interacting with diverse people in various countries has shaped her interest to understand how people think and why each develops their own unique viewpoint from everything they do and where they go, making them who they are. She examine this through the frame of her own experience. She combines these collected experiences, images and ephemera, into a variety of visual frames of how we develop our worldviews, and how that shapes our treatment of each other and of our world. Through photography, collage and painting, she explore ways of thinking about the world around and between us. A variety of layers and a mix of media helps to capture the whole of a memory at the time of its making, with also a sense of it changing. Combining images in various forms helps the viewer approach a way of multiple seeing, with the idea of capturing fragments or nuances in perception. Visual combinations create shades of meaning to capture the complexities of the world. Often this results in fortuitous juxtapositions and interesting unplanned mixtures, along with changes and bits left over as part of the evolution of thought in the span of the work. In these layers of visuals, are layers of meaning to describe the complexities of the world, sometimes seen differently from close and from a distance.
