About The Artwork

For the love of all things holy, what God in heaven would allow for such a travesty to affect a sweet, innocent chicken burger? Wait - before you keep reading - can you guess what company this salvaged bus shelter ad used to be for? You're right, it was Popeyes Chicken! Way to suss it out. You're so smart. Has anyone ever told you that? I bet you have great taste in art, too. You wouldn't be reading this right now if that wasn't the case. Way to win at life generally speaking. You want to know more about it? That's so kind of you to ask. Thank you. All of my paintings are done directly on salvaged bus shelter ads from across Toronto. They're meticulously hand painted. Yes, even changing the word 'Popeyes' to 'No Eyes' was done by hand. I evolve the narratives of the original ads to their natural conclusions. I think everyone at Popeyes would agree that this is the true vision for the brand.

Stephanie Avery is a Toronto-based multi-disciplinary artist with a degree in visual art from York University. With an emphasis on interactivity and empowerment, Stephanie's practice intervenes with familiar spaces, objects and imagery to imbue her subjects with new meanings and narratives. Being especially interested in our collective relationships to the spaces we inhabit, Stephanie explores the world with an equal balance of joy, curiosity and skepticism: a balance she strives to represent in her practice. Her work is both playful and critical, and nothing she does is without a hint of mischief.
