About The Artwork

This piece is extremely special as it is the first large scale mixed media piece as part of The Vulva Project. It took months to find someone who would make this print for me. My normal art printer will not print close up photos of genitals, or any photos where the sexual organs are visible for a woman. It is assumed that it is porn. The irony and conversation surrounding this topic could be discussed ad infinitum. This series is by far the most vulnerable of all my work. Stemming from years of sexual trauma on a personal and collective level, this new sub-section of my human nature explores that which is most judged and objectified in our society. A victim of the system, myself, and almost all women and men have been manipulated in some way by the porn industry and mass media. What is sex? What is the vagina? Pussy? What do you even call this part of the body? Vulva, yoni… after doing a lot of research and soul searching, along with talking to many women, the consensus is that there is no good word for the most sacred part of the female body. What a perfect metaphor. What does this say about this body part? About women? Sexuality? These are some of the questions that I’m currently exploring as I move forward in this part of my healing journey. Taking the issue of body image to a deeper and more intimate place, the topics of sexual identity and gendered body parts arise. One of the many sad realities of the porn industry in addition to the negative psychiatric side effects produced by the mass media in general, has been the normalization of mutilation around the most sensitive parts of our body. One of the intentions behind ‘the Vulva Project’ or ‘Natural Sex’ is to normalize reality, truth and diversity in beauty. materials: (Mixed Media) digital photography on canvas, wood, w/ paint, crystals, rocks, gems, stones, dried flowers, snakeskin and resin.

Elsa Marie Keefe is an artist who explores body positivity through photography, mixed media collage, and book-making. Her complete immersion into the nudist lifestyle has shaped her creative practice. She integrates the figure into nature to comment on significant issues such as sexuality, societal oppression, spirituality, and the sublime. The large-scale pieces are rich in texture and vulnerability. By incorporating natural elements back into the artwork, such as bones, flora, crystals, and dirt, her process emphasizes the cyclical nature of our time here on Earth. Her work has been exhibited nationally and across the boroughs of New York City, including The Blue Gallery, New York; The Invisible Dog Art Center, Brooklyn; Ziome, Miami; and Ophelia’s in Denver, Colorado. She has been featured at Miami Basel, The Other Art Fair, SOHO House, and The Southampton History Museum. Recent interviews with the artist were broadcasted on TNT Radio and available to read on Northshore Magazine and Saatchi Art Blog. The three books published by Elsa are titled Born Wild, Delirium, and Salvation. Blending her commercial and personal fine art practices, Elsa partners with people and organizations to promote healthy naturist lifestyles. She facilitates women’s healing circles and collaborative photographic experiences alongside her art. Elsa Marie Keefe is based between Boston and the Hudson Valley of New York State and is available for conversation, collaboration, and commissions.
