About The Artwork

The painting "Take a Seat" features the profile of a woman seated on her knees and feet, with slightly lowered shoulders, bowed head, and arms gently stretched forward in front of her knees. Her eyes are closed she has a a gentle smile, while newspapers with prominently highlighted headlines about societal expectations and self-discovery are pasted around her. Her dark hair is tied into a ponytail resembling the shape of a swan. In Hungarian, a sentence on the floor stands out, reading "foglaljon helyet" (take a seat). The artist, driven by a desire to explore the complexities of societal pressure and self-discovery, meticulously crafted this piece to provoke contemplation on individual identity and societal norms. The intentional juxtaposition of the woman's serene posture with the chaotic newspaper headlines aims to highlight the contrast between inner peace and external pressures. The incorporation of the Hungarian phrase adds a layer of cultural depth, inviting viewers to contemplate the universal themes of finding one's place in the world. Executed with layers of paint and collage techniques, the artwork captures the texture and depth of the composition. The use of bold colors and contrasting elements creates a visually captivating narrative that encourages viewers to engage with the piece on multiple levels. "Take a Seat" seeks to evoke feelings of introspection, empathy, and empowerment. The artist hopes that viewers will reflect on their own experiences of societal expectations and self-discovery, finding solace in the depiction of inner strength and resilience. Through this piece, the artist aims to challenge societal norms and inspire viewers to embrace their authentic selves unapologetically. This artwork was created as a reflection on the complexities of identity and the journey towards self-acceptance, inviting viewers to take a seat and contemplate the beauty of embracing one's true essence amidst the noise of societal expectations.

Jelena Vragović was born in Vršac, Serbia in 1973. She is a member of ULUS and ULUPUDS. She had independent exhibitions in Belgrade, Vršac, Pančevo, Novi Sad, Kučevo, Dimitrovgrad, Arilje, and Niš. Furthermore, she has participated in numerous collective exhibitions and art colonies in Serbia and abroad. Her art consists of landscapes and figure paintings and has received a plethora of rewards throughout the years. Old Greeks treated the female nude paintings as passive beauty while the male nude paintings were presented in action and seen as the embodiment of gods themselves. Erotic female bodies are seen as objects, while erotic male bodies are treated as a sacrifice of epic existence. Erotic male nude paintings seem to have remained the last taboo – they are rarely painted and thus I wish to bravely offer my perception of the topic. The paintings are an act of rebellion against the world that is asleep, resembling an epic scream and action that we gave up on.
