FROM THE SERIES • OUTSIDE My recent work portraying the proto Jazz greats of the Harlem Renaissance in NYC had me thinking. To be a jazz artist is to choose a lifestyle of expression, interpretation, and creation. To stand apart. But isn’t that what I am doing as an artist as well? Isn’t that the “art life” embodied? With “OUTSIDE,” I am probing themes of creation itself as an expression of “otherness” and creative output as a way to exceed the mundane. What does that mean to me as an artist and how does it speak to the viewer? As my subject, I have chosen 9 piano players of the Jazz genre to represent the theme. Each one is set against a grid of work-a-day life, standing in opposition to it. That grid is meticulously arranged and defined to align to itself at differing angles for each painting. The artists are misaligned to that grid, standing at the angle that the viewer looks at the work. That invites the viewer to identify with the artist and step beyond the average into that life of iconoclasm and expression. In all, a personal series plumbing the depths of my own experience as a creative through 9 legendary artists.

BIOGRAPHY I am most interested in exploring belief systems, the birth and death of the American Dream, the nature and validity of desire, as well as identity and loss on a personal level. Visually, my work lies at the intersection of the organic, the geometric, the iconic, the abstract, and the found. All of that takes shape into mostly large-scale assemblage pieces that hover in between mediums. I feel like my body of work can be encapsulated in three words :: abstraction, definition and deconstruction. I have had works appear in juried art shows across the US, shown with selected galleries, have shown in several cities with The Other Art Fair, had my work featured on the album art for multi-platinum-selling musical artist Andy Grammer, been chosen from over 100,000 artists to be featured in the Saatchi Art catalog, had my work published in multiple art magazines and publications, and was selected for inclusion in the London Art Biennale. STATEMENT I am a mixed media visual artist. The rhythmic, the esoteric, the mystic, the poetic, and the intuitive drive my work. All of those shape my aesthetic and give my pieces backbone. The breadth of the sublime, the mist of inner spaces, and the intrinsically American are also found on my canvases. My long background as both a writer and designer roots the abstract work in language, both conceptual and visual.
