This painting is acrylic on canvas and depicts the iconic image of the cigarette. I am pretty sure that future generations will look back on the 20th century habit of smoking as a strange mass addiction that the population as a whole accepted to the point that it was more normal to smoke than to not. The words on the picture number exactly 1000. (A picture paints a thousand words). I painted the image of the cigarette in the mouth, and then covered the whole painting with cardboard, which had opening doors like a xmas December calendar which has chocolate under each door. I then asked anyone, (friends, passers by, strangers etc. etc.) if they would write a comment after opening a box. I told no-one what the image was, but simply told them that it represented a 20th century iconic image. What they wrote was entirely up to them. After they wrote their comment, I closed the door back up, so that no-one saw the image, and no-one saw what anyone else had written. There are some remarkable connections between some of the comments. I counted the words, stopping the exercise at exactly 1000. A picture paints a thousand words.
