ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In "3 Couleurs", painter Catherine Maddens captures the essence of colourful simplicity, guiding us to hidden worlds and dimensions through her painting. Inspired by the energy of some of Josh Smith's work, she deliberately limits herself to three primordial colours, to demonstrate how simplicity can unlock deep and authentic expressivity. On a large-format canvas, gestural abstraction comes to life, with each colour - vibrant, saturated and fundamental - revealing itself with force. Red symbolises passion, blue endless depth, and green the vitality of nature. These primary hues create a visual dialogue, a dance that transcends the boundaries of the canvas, inviting the viewer to plunge into an exploration of perception. Maddens uses gestural abstraction not only to paint but also to shape the void, inviting us to discover a space where exploration beyond the visible is encouraged. Each gesture of the brush is an exploration, an invitation to discover new realities and experiences. "3 Colours celebrates abstraction in its purest form, affirming the power of abstract art to awaken the boundless imagination.

Catherine Maddens is a French abstract painter who has been living in Paris for 30 years. Her unusual career began in Normandy, where her love of art is a family affair, passed down from childhood by her father, an amateur painter-sculptor inspired by the Impressionists. Passionate about Art Brut, she obtained a degree in clinical psychology before branching out into a 28-year career as a graphic designer. In 2009, she decided to devote herself fully to abstract painting, finding in this practice a profound link between free gesture, the intensity of color and introspection. Her artistic style is characterized by a bold experimentation with color, movement and textures. Each canvas is an inner journey that questions humanity, the invisible and the beauty of Nature – especially trees, sources of inspiration. Catherine Maddens explores painting as a conscious space of freedom. She combines color, energy and light on the surface of the canvas, to create a unique, emotional and immersive visual experience. She draws inspiration from different movements in art history, such as abstract expressionism, impressionism and Color Field. She studies the works of her artistic mentors such as Joan Mitchell, Cy Twombly, Fabienne Verdier, Megan Rooney, Martha Jungwirth, Katharina Grosse, Günther Fôrg or Albert Oehlen etc. She solicits the viewer's consciousness to create deep and imaginal encounters with her works. Her work has been exhibited at the Oksébô biennial at the Château de la Roche-Guyon and in several Parisian galleries. Discover the unique universe of Catherine Maddens where each abstract canvas invites a sensitive and vibrant exploration of consciousness, emotion, the invisible in the colors of Painting.
