A Bear Becomes the Garden Painting

This piece grew from a place of stillness, though it is rich with thick, expressive paint that oozes down the sides like cake frosting. The very thickness of the paint speaks of it's maker. The work expresses the relation between we who walk on two legs, those who walk on four and those who grow out of the ground. Water pours down the bear's back, as though he too is of the land. His hind-side disappears into the green mush of earth and stone, yet, he is aware. The stones are alive, the water too is living. Each element is represented in this painting and they speak to one another: sunshine illuminates the blue mountains behind him, and yet his paws seem covered in a thick snow, spring blossoms above his back and deep oceans open out below. This painting is a mirror, for he looks into your eyes. In this way, the bear who becomes the garden is just like the viewer who becomes the painting and the raindrops who become the sea.
