ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Currently available at Shockboxx Gallery and . This painting links the #metoo movement with the Delacroix painting, The Death of Sardanapalus, which was extracted from Herodotus', Histories. This painting reverses the sado-erotic power dynamic of the Delacroix painting, empowering the women by making Saradanapalus an unwitting victim of his hedonistic appetites and the women he expects to fulfill them. At first glance, the painting appears to be a hedonistic romp, but upon further inspection, it reveals itself as a ruse intended to overthrown a Tyrant. This is part of a series of paintings in which I reimagine common history painting narratives into revisionist histories in which traditional power dynamics are either re-examined or overthrown.
