These small felins were given to me, on two different occasions, by an old friend of mine, as well as emeritus hairdresser: Maurice Kavanagh. Irish-born, Maurice lived in youth the effervescent Swinging London of the 60th. He married and I moved with his wife to Milan, where they opened a bisexual hair salon in the bohemian district of Brera. It was a revolutionary initiative, that opened new horizons to all of us young men, until then used to go haircutting in the classical “Barber Shop” strictly male, very similar to a dentist’s office. The Maurice’s salon nothing had to do with that sad past: it was a casual and elegant apartment, furnished by a relaxed mixture of old-fashioned and modernity, with some mirrors golden framed and a discreet réservé for the washing. Instead of cutting your hairs, it seemed they invited you to a cocktail-party. Some hears later his wife leaved him and get back to London with the baby. He continued cutting hair to his loyal customers, but at home, while he opened with some partners a restaurant: the “Lucca” on via Castaldi, of which too I made myself client. He opened then another restaurant in Bologna, in the great public market and at the end he decided to move to Puglia. But he came to see me here, in Cruïlles, many times and we always love each other very much. He fondly followed my artistic trajectory and he has been an ardent admirer of my leopard spots painting. From there come the two gifts. The Tiger is made by cardboard, while the Nice Leopard, more refined, is made by ceramic. The backdrop is, obviously, the jungle.
